Nonsense gets a new, over-the-top and super hyper meaning in Singh Is Bliing with Akshay Kumar helping the highly caricaturised kitsch on just one premise — that anything he touches, even wanton lunacy, will, well, bling!
Singh Is Bliing is that alag level ki incredible nonsense that amazingly and pretty often strikes a chord among our front benchers. Soon there will be figures floating around the film, calling it a Rs100 crore super duper success in the first week.
But fact is that despite the incorrigible Akshay, despite his Sikh act and despite his brand of unapologetic humour, this one is really and in the truest sense a movie doting on madness of the mind, body and soul. The only thing beautiful is Amy Jackson and the only thing correct about this film is to have maintained her language issues.
Other than that, of course there is no question of a plot or a coherent story, or of anything even remotely meaningful. Akshay as Raftaar Singh wears crazy clothes, does crazy things like starting all and finishing none, is of course mamma da putter and pappaji da thorn, of course has a thing for gori mem with whom he cannot ever exchange a word and, of course, he has to hold forth with his pagdi, his mannerisms and his upside down dress sense.
Akshay as the centrepiece of this silliest of the silly mounts does the buffoonery in a crescendo that can be maintained by only a few in Bollywood, the other one being Ranvir Singh. How much of that you can take depends on how much of kitsch you can absorb and how much of slapstick your brain is conditioned to take.
Hopefully, for Akshay and his Singh this-that-and-the-other series, there’s a huge audience out there that can lap such entirety of trash up, that doesn’t mind the Prabhudeva kind of looking down on women, his kind of toilet humour where spraying su su by grown men is a laugh and his kind of sex at the wheels where body fluids rush you know where in Akshay Kumar as he convulses under the butt of Jackson doing an action stunt on the driving seat.

Criminal: Arresting memory transplant

Cast : Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Ryan Reynolds, Jordi Mollà Rated : 6/10 Big names, big imagination and good execution make this memory transplant thriller a good one to be with, especially with Kevin Costner doing a pretty good job with a character he has never played – that of an emotionless, incarcerated, brutal killer in whose brain a do-good, wife and daughter loving dead CIA’s agent’s (Ryan Reynolds) remembrances are inserted for a trail that is important for the organisation. The underdone role has been handled well by Costner, much like a successful experiment.
