A stark, brutal & true masterpiece

Image
12 Years A Slave Starring : Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch Rated:  8/10 It is stark, it is moving and it is hugely discomforting. But  A Twelve Years Slave  is a masterpiece in a uniquely nagging way. Encasing America’s darkest part of history when slavery made a mockery of human dignity and ripped apart basic sensitivity, it makes it all the more painful to know that it’s based on a real story written by the slave who was once a “free Negro” living happily with his wife and two children in New York. Duped by two White tricksters into taking up an assignment in Washington DC, he is abducted, tortured, sold and taken to Louisiana as slave Blaat, a runaway from Georgia. It’s a more than stunning performance by Chiwetel Ejiofor who plays Blaat. His eyes draw you into the deepest of emotions which churn inside you as you go through his agonising journey and incredible freedom after 12 years of sub-human existence under master...

Planes: Fire & Rescue

Planes: Fire & Rescue Starring : Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Danny Mann, Teri Hatcher Rated : 5/10 It’s a wrong month for the release of this kind of an animation film because all children are into their Unit 2 tests and not many adults will be tickled by this one, and definitely not at Rs 300 plus for a ticket. This, however, does not mean that the animation is lazy or the story out of line. Both are in place, as most Hollywood films ensure even though you could say that the mirth factor is a tad lazy. The racey Dusty Crophopper, who gave the real pace to this series, sadly seems to have lost his gear box and is out of the circuit with no replacements coming his way. In this one he, goes for a different kind of training far far away from his original want. He is at a remote garage where a retired TV star (truck) is leading a host of vehicles into reorienting their careers and not getting waylaid into depression due to failures or derailments of any kind. I...

Blackmail

*ing: Irrfan Khan, Kirti Kulhari, Divya Dutta, Arunoday Singh, Omi Vaidya Rated: 4/10 As Irrfan battles a rare brain ailment in a hospital abroad, his latest film Blackmail rolled out this week without much ado. The film, an attempted black comedy of blackmail, deceit, infidelity and murder is no Box Office ringer even though the genre is new and worked hard upon. Irrfan is the centrepoint of the film and does not let you down even once but even his acting acumen is unable to save the film which has weak plot, too much of the same thing going on throughout the film, thus nibbling away the interest of the viewers. A middle class advertising agency employee (Irrfan) loves his beautiful wife who does not reciprocate so he makes do with other employees wives’ pictures in office if you know what I mean. He admires his wife’s beauty from a wall hole in the bedroom but one day when he returns early with dreams of romancing his wife, he finds a big burly guy in her bed. And thus star...
