The Wolf of Wall Street: Serenading debauchery as never before
The Wolf of Wall Street
Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Margot Robbie, Matthew McConaughey
Rated: 7.5/10
What can you say about this deadly combination of director Martin Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, except that it is, well, deadly in all kinds of ways. It’s a completely insane movie serenading the ultimate debauchery that money and the power to generate money from nothing ignites in a person. It is as if the Scorsese-DiCaprio duo has decided that they will assault your senses as never before and even as you cower under the onslaught, you feel embarrassed at getting haplessly hooked on to the proceedings.
Much like the cocaine he sniffs and the uppers he swallows to devastating effect, DiCaprio is wantonly potent as the wolf who makes millions on Wall Street selling false shares and falser dreams. Though histrionic excellence has been his handmaiden for most part of his Hollywood career, one can safely say that this is his best performance ever. As the lean, mean and totally corrupt man of the stocks and shares world, he is the big bull who holds you by the scruff of the collar and makes you both worship and be disgusted by the power of money.
Scorsese is impeccable in stitching together a film that seems to be the most difficult storyline to shape up. But, even though most of the dialogues are a trail of cuss words meant to make you cringe, the gripper that he brings out of his hat is amazing. It is a film one will hate and love all in one go. It is a performance that will remain in your inward eye for even longer. It is an experience one can’t really advise anyone to undergo — and yet if you don’t you might just have missed the explosive side of badness which grows on you.
