Student of the year: Karan wali dream

The oomph here is male, overtly, rawly male. The bods, as Karan Johar would have them — they are ostensibly in college these boys (read males) but most of the time you will see them emerging out of the pool in a male Ursula Andress avataar — bheega, sexy and well, material enough for a gay wet dream.
The abs here, mind you, are many more than six, the muscles seemingly run out of some Mr Universe’s body to sit pretty on Karan’s new finds Siddharth Malhotra and Varun Dhawan, more Sid than Varun most times.
In the middle of all this Karan wali worship of male bods, Johar suddenly remembers here and there that there is Alia too to show off. So she suddenly does a bikini shoot or a chhoti choli wala number to make her presence felt — rest of the time the boys think her to be a red-lipped pouting bimbo good to be on one rippling wala arm or the other.
Then there’s a campus too — Karan wala college — where designer wear, Ferraris, style wali bikes and sworoski wali dresses rule the roost, where the dean is gay wala pink, where there is more macho wala football than parhney wali studies, where sheer wala chiffon merges with biology wali chemistry and earthy bodies of the two male leads define the geography of education.
It is a picture perfect school of full-on velagiri, friendships and rivalries, and Karan has a way to suck you into the totally incredible wala classroom routine.
One has to give it to him — despite all the Karan wali kitsch, momentum is everything — no comma, no fullstops — only body worship of an unadulterated kind. Yes, Karan’s having fun and he decides to let you into Johar wali party. Only, you have to leave your brains behind, have a penchant for rippling wali male bodies, geeli wali muscles, chhoti wali male undies, badi wali chhaties, college wali mardanagi and gay wali thoughts. Add to this, puraney wale gaaney to nayi wali beats and you have a cute, engaging, don’t mind wali picture replete with stunning wali dresses, masti walah school and, of course, fun wali picture.

Criminal: Arresting memory transplant

Cast : Kevin Costner, Gary Oldman, Tommy Lee Jones, Ryan Reynolds, Jordi Mollà Rated : 6/10 Big names, big imagination and good execution make this memory transplant thriller a good one to be with, especially with Kevin Costner doing a pretty good job with a character he has never played – that of an emotionless, incarcerated, brutal killer in whose brain a do-good, wife and daughter loving dead CIA’s agent’s (Ryan Reynolds) remembrances are inserted for a trail that is important for the organisation. The underdone role has been handled well by Costner, much like a successful experiment. As he gets acquainted with emotions of love, caring and affection that have been alien to him, he starts turning from a monster to a human being but the director does well to not completely erase his original personality.
